Unfortunately, the MkVI commercials might be better, but the car isn't. The MkIV commercials used the tagline "Drivers Wanted." The MkVI ads should use "Passengers Wanted." This quote seems to suggest that somehow the MkIV was more of a driver's car than the MkVI. Let's look at the facts about which one is more of a driver's car... The MkIV and MkVI both have a twist beam rear suspension. The MkIV and MkVI both have hydraulic power steering. The MkIV and MkVI both have the 2.Slow as their base engine. The MkIV and MkVI both have 200hp engines in GLI form. -- Hmm... I know that you'll argue that you were referring to the interior downgrades, but you said that the MkVI's slogan should be "passengers wanted," and since the driver and the passenger share the same space inside of the car, then clearly you were referring to driving dynamics and not passenger comforts. Now let's look at where the MkVI is actually better.... The MkVI has more laser welds and a much, MUCH stiffer chassis than the MkIV. The MkVI GLI has IRS; the MkIV does not. Every MkVI comes with ESP; most MkIV's did not. According to numbers that I've heard, the MkVI drums stop faster than MkIV discs. -- It seems to me that maybe the "Drivers Wanted" slogan fits better with the MkVI. So let's try to play nice and not kill every Jetta VI thread with bashing, especially when it's baseless. I'd expect a current design to be more advanced than an 11 year old car. The fact is that the MkVI is barely improved from the MkIV based on the specs above. Plus, as for the steering, the MkVI is definitely tuned for the American market, while the MkIV's was tuned to more European levels of assist. Actually, as a driver's car, the MkV was the best Jetta ever. The 2002-2005 1.8T had 180hp and the 2002-2004 GLI (mine) came with a 24V VR6 with 200hp. The best engine ever offered in a Jetta, ever, IMHO. The 2.0T kicks a$$, but the 24V VR6's growl owns. Actually, as a driver's car, the MkV was the best Jetta ever. I'd agree that the MkV was the best driver's Jetta ever (due to being the only generation with IRS standard)... minus the GLI. With the same suspension setup and engine/tranny with a more rigid chassis, the MkVI GLI should be better yet... the MkVI GLI should be top-dog Jetta if it gets the proper Euro interior. That being said, the MkVI is better than the MkIV mechanically in almost every area. Though the MkIV was the first Jetta with laser welds, the MkIV cars had horrid structural rigidity values and thus poor body roll ratings; the MkV's greatly improved upon this and the MkVI is supposed to be even more rigid than even the fifth generation cars. The '11 car is significantly better than the 11 year old car in many ways. And with steering... let's stop pretending. ALL cars had heavy steering in '99 compared to today's versions of the same models. You can call the MkIV Jetta's steering "Euro-tuned," and I'll agree, but it's heavier style was the norm of all compacts in that era. The MkVI Jettta's steering is lighter than usual, but that's because all compacts today are yielding in the direction of light steering. Furthermore, many current BMW and even 'Benz offerings have been criticized for light steering tuning. Coincidence? I think not. Had the MkVI Jetta come with heavy steering, its handling would have been juxtaposed against both Euro and Japanese competition with light steering = fish out of water. Lighter steering feel allows the Jetta to feel more like a modern German car, if cross-shopped, as well as more like a Japanese compact, if cross-shopped. Within the last year I've driven several new BMWs and 'Benz's (I was a valet at a fundraiser... don't ask), and I'll tell you that the Jetta VI (which I've driven) is no less "light" in steering feel than many of the CURRENT offerings of other contemporary European brands. If you don't light the light feel, then sorry for you... everyone is moving in that direction. Reply With Quote jsmyle1%... Not nearly as cheesy as some of the more recent ones. I can actually imagine someone getting up at a commercial break during their favorite show in prime time and actually having their attention grabbed by the catchy beat.....bright colors.........great looking car (with nice wheels!!! )....and short and to-the-point story lines. If the commercials do their job of driving folks to the showrooms, then it is really up to the dealerships and their staff to do their thing. I'm in for seeing what happens.
