The MOT tester said the emissions were as good as you`d expect from a new car with no visible smoke as it was tested. Drives as you`d expect from a VW and returned just short of 60mpg average on a 1000 mile Leeds - Cornwall - London - Leeds trip.If you are familiar with this particular model then you will know that they have a tendency to blow head gaskets and it`s a very expensive job to fix them. The head gasket was replaced last June and the cam belt, tensioner, idler and water pump were changed just last month so these expensive jobs are out of the way and the cam belt will be good for another 60,000 miles. The head gasket was replaced with an uprated MLS item and all new stretch bolts were used when refitting. During this job, the opportunity was taken to clean the EGR valve housing and inlet manifold. Also, the coolant system was flushed and refilled with genuine VW G12 and is still clear and pink as you`d expect. I have not needed to top it up at all nor have I needed to top the oil up.Beware of any TDI of this model around this mileage - some are on sale now as the owners know their cars are showing early signs of head gasket failure so are selling the car before it becomes noticeable during a test drive. Don`t get caught out and stuck with a huge bill! The oil warning light is on but this is due to a faulty sensor, I replaced this for £40 last year after going through a puddle and it`s happened again so i left it. The car needs a clean both inside and out, also the glove box wont close by itself so is held closed by tape**** All of these are age related, bodywork is not perfect. however it would make a nice little project!! mileage is genuine!!!
