He couldn’t believe the GT cost just £1500 less than the Golf GTI in Britain. In Cyprus the difference is nearer to £7k, apparently. My biggest stumbling block with the GT is just how closely aligned its price is to the GTI's. Imagine if the GT cost £13k in Britain... At that price point, it makes a lot more sense. By Ben Barry Logbook Total Mileage Since Last Report Overall MPG Since Last report Fuel Costs Other Costs Highs Lows 2576 miles n/a 31.8 mpg n/a £447.11 none Clever engine, cheaper than a GTI… …Not that much cheaper, I really want a GTI Previous reports 19 May 2008 Golf GT vs GTI ... in Cyprus 1 April 2008 Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI - first report Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI - First report 1 April 2008. What I really wanted was a Golf GTI. Problem was, we’d already run one on the CAR fleet back in 2006. So I could give up the Golf dream altogether, or take the next best thing to a GTI: the Golf GT Sport. I chose the latter option, which actually makes for the better test. Everyone knows the GTI is brilliant. But the GT Sport? Most people haven’t even heard of it. Confusingly, there are four models available, all of which look pretty much identical: two 2.0-litre diesels and two 1.4-litre petrols. To stay truest to the next-best-thing-to-a-GTI concept, I’ve gone for the most powerful petrol. So before long I had the £18,522 VW parked on my drive. The GT looks pretty similar to a GTI and, if you mumble, hard-of-hearing passersby might think it’s one too. Anoraks will point out that the front grille is different and the GTI sideskirts are missing, but let’s be honest: most folks couldn’t tell the two Golfs apart. I’ve given the options list more of a work out than most owners ever will. My car comes with sat-nav – complete with 30GB hard drive – for £1450; heated leather seats (£1645); 18-inch Charleston alloys (£630); bi-Xenon headlights (£750) and a winter pack, which adds heated washer jets and a low washer fluid warning light for a £205 premium. Which ones are essentials and which needless indulgences? We’ll find out over the next six months. But what makes this test really interesting is the engine and whether the GT – just £1500 cheaper than the 197bhp GTI in 168bhp trim – can make a case for itself against its brilliantly rounded big brother. So, that engine then. The GT packs just 1.4-litres but combines both a supercharger and a turbocharger – the former crank-driven device spooling up instantly for low-rpm shove, the latter waiting for exhaust gases to spin a turbine and force more air into the engine. It’s a well-rated engine, picking up ‘best new engine’ at the 2006 International Engine of the Year awards. And it offers a decent blend of performance and economy too: VW claiming 38.7mpg on the combined cycle, a 0-62mph dash of 7.9sec and a 137mph top speed (GTI: 35.3mpg, 7.2sec, 145mph). The GT is also cheaper to insure than the GTI, but the difference is nowhere near as big as you’d expect – specialists Adrian Flux quote a clean-living 20-year-old from Peterborough £1200 versus £1260 for the GTI. Gut feel? The figures don’t quite add up and you’re best off holding out for the GTI. But the GT’s got six months to change my mind. Strangley the 1.4 version in the Sirocco seems ok. This is 10bhp less than the golf which I put down to modified software to overcome the glitch. What has put me off VW/Audi products is stories of failed engines, turbos & injectors(diesel engine). I would be interested in the experience of others as I do like the Sirocco. I wanted the Honda type R, but my wife cant put up with the spoiler in the rear window. 22 May 2009 14:13 loydaniels says RE: Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI long-term test review So long GT. I just read that Ben finally finished the review with the GT. So again, if the price different between the GT and GTi here, was much less, I'd buy a GTi, but the price difference including insurance and registration definitely make up for its shortcomings. I was really sad to hear about the turbo exploding. Mine has been running ok so far. *knocks on wood* Hopefully it will continue that way. I still love this little car and after chasing a GTi I realized there's not much power difference on a straigh, which makes me wonder if it's really worth getting the Revo remap. I've been quite worried about long-term effects on the engine and the exploding turbo doesn't help put me at ease. For now I'll concentrate on some visual modifications (mostly GTi parts). Oh, and you're not alone on liking the MK V's roundish figure. I think it's a very cute but mean looking car (especially the GT and GTi grilles). 03 December 2008 13:01 Plasma says RE: Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI long-term test review I have had my 170 GT sport for 6 months now. In hindsight, I wish I got the GTI. I don't find it too jerky from a sdanding start, I find 3rd and 4th gear very jerky when accelerting from about 30mph. You put your foot down a bit to go and nothing happens, so you put it down a bit more and then boom, full boost, so you lift off a little, not boost...jerky all the time. A real pain the the back side really. It basically feels like there is no supercharger fitted. I have even put my foot down in 3rd, went to full boost but had no acceleration, the turbo showed full boost but had not engaged??? dangerous..sure! JC was correct with his review. I didnt test drive it long enough really. The brakes are strange, the first few inches of pedal do nothing, then they suddenly bite and you have whiplash. My Dad has the 125bhp Leon TSI and its a complete different story, very smooth, very quite, better economy, performance feels the same!! There is a nice resting place for your acceleration foot when cruise is on, gear box is nicer. The only downside is I dont like the ac controls as much but I wish I had bought one of them now, MUCH nicer to drive and a lot cheaper too. 13 September 2008 23:04 loydaniels says RE: Volkswagen Golf GT Sport TSI long-term test review I was really sad to read about Bary's broken engines at the track with the racing jetta tsi AND the golf gt in the same day!! It just adds to my own worries about the car since I've always feared the complexity of this engine and the risks of tuning such a small engine to such high performance. I was actually thinking about revo's ecu remap for the tsi engine to output up to 205 bhp but not I'm seriously considering its effects on the engine. Good thing is of course I don't take the car to track so it's not driven very hard... not more than a few seconds a time in regular streets. So far it's been fine. *knocks on wood* 08 September 2008 07:45 Show all comments Become a CAR contributor Upload stories, photos or videos direct to the site, or email newsdesk@carmagazine.co.uk. 6 ISSUES FOR £1 Search Car Reviews: You're in - Car Reviews: Car Group Tests VW Golf 1.4 TSI GT Sport Class’s image and quality benchmark remains a strong proposition February 2008 With so many family hatchbacks entering the market, it’s easy to overlook the Golf, especially since the fifth generation is such a familiar sight on UK roads. But its sophisticated image still sets the standard for desirability in this class, and it’s easy to see why it is so popular. The body’s simple lines and detailing appeal directly to Volkswagen’s core buyers. There’s not much that catches the eye, aside from the circular rear light clusters, but the unfussy approach is neat and welcome. And besides, what the Golf lacks in visual appeal, it gains in build quality.Few rivals come close to feeling so solid and, even with its improvements, the 308 cabin
lags behind. The VW’s soft-touch, leather-trimmed steering wheel is great to hold and,
from the gearchange to the stereo controls, everything works with fantastic precision. While it’s not dramatic, the cabin is attractive and user-friendly. Blue-lit dials, damped cubby lids and top-notch materials provide an upmarket atmosphere. Adjustments for the driving position are excellent, and offer plenty of movement for both the seat and the steering column. The Golf’s boot is longer and wider than the Peugeot’s, so although the 308 is narrowly ahead in terms of outright capacity, the Volkswagen has the edge overall on practicality. Adding to the appeal is the fact there’s plenty of stowage on board, with deep door pockets both in the front and back, a good-sized glovebox and a dash-top cubby. The rear seats don’t fold down flat as they do in the Peugeot, but that is only a minor gripe. The excellent TSI engine is equipped with a supercharger and a turbocharger. As a result,
the little unit develops an impressive 138bhp from its 1.4-litre capacity, and it’s a real gem. Volkswagen also offers a more powerful
168bhp version – astounding, considering
the engine’s modest capacity. We’ve already been impressed by the latter variant, and the lower-output motor is equally good. Unlike the 308’s unit, there’s virtually
no turbo lag and only a slight whine from the supercharger. From little more than tickover,
you get a meaty shove in the back, followed by smooth, linear power all the way up to 7,000rpm. The slick six-speed manual gearbox ensures smoother progress than in the Peugeot, although there was no separating these two models at the test track. The Golf completed the sprint from
0-60mph in 8.8 seconds – that’s only one-tenth-of-a-second faster than the 308.However, the TSI engine is available only with the GT Sport trim – and this features suspension that’s been lowered by 15mm. It doesn’t have
the sharpness of VW’s flagship GTI model on
the road, but is still eager through bends, with good body control and plenty of grip. It provides
a greater degree of reassurance than the 308, and feels more settled at high speeds. This comes at a price, however. At £18,110,
the Golf is an expensive choice, and although its TSI technology is impressive, that still seems
a lot to pay. You could get the keys to a GTI
for £20,815 – only £2,700 more. What’s more, the standard equipment specification isn’t especially generous. Climate control, a multifunction steering wheel and cruise control are all on the options list. So while the
VW is desirable, will the high purchase cost
count against it in the final verdict? Enduring Golf has an unrivalled reputation for quality, blended with keen driver appeal. AT A GLANCE: The fuss-free Golf shows again why it’s one of the best choices in the class. While the VW is neither as cheap nor as well equipped as some rivals, if you’re happy to pay the high price, you’ll be rewarded with a car that’s impeccably built and great to drive. It’s every inch a prestige hatch. ECONOMY Over our test route, the Golf averaged returns of 35.2mpg. That’s a good economy figure, especially as its engine uses both a turbocharger and a supercharger. RESIDUALS the resale value shows just how well regarded the Golf is. After three years, this GT Sport will be worth 48.6 per cent of its price new. Only the GTI performs better. SERVICING VW could also do with improving its network – it was 20th in Driver Power. That’s still ahead of Vauxhall and Ford, though, while the first three services come to £540. TAX Lower-band drivers face an annual tax bill of £797 for the Golf. This is £54 more than the Peugeot would cost, and is due to the Volkswagen’s higher list price. Verdict Plenty of storage; more legroom than the 308; excellent finish. Golf isn’t the boldest design in this class of the market; cabin is sombre.
