Challenger 392 Hits Road Volkswagen reveals Race Touareg 3 ahead of Dakar Rally previous next Share By Nick Aziz Volkswagen has officially unveiled its Race Touareg 3, which will compete in the 2011 Dakar Rally. Representing the third iteration of the racing ‘ute, the Race Touareg 3 builds off the success of the Race Touareg 2. However, the latest model features better aerodynamics and revised styling to reflect its road-going counterpart. “The evolution of the vehicle into the Race Touareg 3 represents the next logical step we’re taking towards our big aim of achieving the hat-trick at the Dakar Rally,” said Volkswagen Motorsport Director Kris Nissen. “With new aerodynamics, the Race Touareg 3 will look even more spectacular than before [...] Its core is well proven because we continue to bank on the consistently optimized technology package that has been giving the Race Touareg first-rate performance and maximum reliability.” The Kevlar and carbon fiber body has been improved for better cooling and airflow. The truck also sports a fresh look with new LED lights, a new grille, window line, rear clamshell and wheels. Power for the Race Touareg 3 will be provided by a 300 horsepower 2.5-liter diesel delivering 442 pound-feet of torque, promising outstanding performance and economy. The SUV will accelerate to 62 mph in 6.1 seconds before reaching a top speed of 117 mph in nearly any conditions. A set of specially developed BF Goodrich 235/85 R16 tires provide the grip to deal with sand dunes, deep mud, gravel, and broken tarmac roads.
